Bangladesh’s tour of Zimbabwe for 1 test, 3 ODI and 3 T20 matches took place between 7 July and 25 July at the Harare Stadium, Zimbabwe, is co-sponsored by a website known as ‘baji77.net’ or ‘bajisports.live’. The website baji77.net appears to have been setup in May, 2021 and the site bajisports.live was setup in September, 2020 from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by Wilayah Persekutuan. The site facilitates betting in India and Bangladesh. ‘Baji’ in Bengali and Hindi means betting. The website in question is operated from Maharastra, India.
Though in India betting laws change by state, it is allowed in West Bengal. But illegally gambling is punishable with imprisonment and heavy fines. The Constitution of Bangladesh encourages to “adopt effective measures to prevent prostitution and gambling”. But the current laws are ambigious. The main laws regarding gambling are ‘Public Gambling Act of 1867’, ‘Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Amendment) Ordinance, 1976’ and ‘The Penal Code,1860’ these laws at most allows to punish people who facilitate gambling no more than one-thousand taka(approx. 12 USD).
During 2019, Bangladesh Police raided and confiscated gambling equipments and imprisoned 200 people in a high profile case. The legality of clubs were also of recent hot topic in the parliament following criminal incidents in clubs of Bangladesh. Though BTRC(regualtory company of Bangladesh telecommunication) has blocked gambling websites with the help of internet gateway operators in the past, they have never taken legal action against any website.
